About

There are a lot of mom blogs out there. There aren’t so many dad blogs. I’d like to change that, so I’ve been sharing some thoughts here on being a father since 2012. My hope is that doing so will help me be a better father. If there are other dads out there who benefit from my ramblings, that’s cool, too.

That’s me, celebrating my 40th birthday at Canyonlands National Park in Utah a couple of years ago.

After six years as a single dad, I met Emily in 2016. She’s amazing, and she’s now my wife. She was a single mom, and finding each other has helped us heal and grow and experience profound joy. We have a lot in common, from our Church of Christ background to our love for art museums and national parks. I love exploring the world with her.

We have a blended family, and together we have four kids, ages 4, 7, 10, and 14. We live in Franklin, Tennessee, but where we stay busy with jobs and church and school and hobbies. As great as Middle Tennessee is, we all love to travel and see the wider world. Here are the kids in 2018 during our spring break road trip, which included stops at Mount Rushmore, Badlands National Park, and Yellowstone.

(When it comes to posting photos of my kids, I’m using the Inception rule: You can only see them from a distance and from behind.)

You can follow me on Twitter, @drkbrf, if that’s your thing. I’m on Flickr and on Instagram, too. For my professional work (I direct the Center for Teaching at Vanderbilt University), see derekbruff.org.
