Last Saturday had several moments worth remembering, thanks in part to some unseasonably warm and sunny January weather.

I hadn’t planned on good weather on Saturday. No, I had planned to spend two hours in a darkened theater. It turned out to be a good choice, however. We saw The Book of Life at the Belcourt, their Saturday morning kids show. This was a movie whose title and trailer didn’t grab me (in spite of the involvement of Guillermo del Toro), but a favorable review in the Nashville Scene convinced me to give it a shot. The movie turned out to be a lot of fun, with engaging characters, beautiful designs, and catchy songs. The original songs were really good, maybe not Frozen good, but good enough that the girls talked me into downloading the soundtrack later in the day. The movie used a few pop songs to clever effect, including a didn’t-see-that-coming use of Radiohead’s “Creep.”

The movie let out just before lunch, and, since we’re rarely down in Nashville, I suggested we eat down there instead of heading back to Franklin. The seven-year-old is incredibly picky when it comes to eating out, but I talked her into the Edgehill Cafe’s Grilled PBCB: a peanut butter, chocolate, and banana sandwich. Had it been Nutella instead of chocolate, that would have been her three favorite foods! I meet friends and colleagues for coffee at Edgehill from time to time, and I know what good food they have, including the PBCB. My favorite is the McHenry, a pepperjack pimento cheese sandwich that made me reconsider everything I thought I knew about pimento cheese. So the three of us had lunch there, with the eleven-year-old opting for a blueberry muffin. With the sun streaming in and the eclectically decorated Edgehill Cafe buzzing with interesting customers, we had a good time. Even if Lily didn’t like the PBCB! The peanut butter was too “melty.” (I told you she was picky.)

Our next stop was Kohl’s, another indoor experience, but it had to be done. The girls have both gone through growth spurts in recent months, and I’ve had to retire most of their clothes. We really needed a couple of new outfits and I had a 30% off coupon, so Kohl’s it was. I’m not sure if it was the good vibes from The Book of Life or all the sunshine powering them up, but the girls made it through the clothes shopping experience without a single complaint. And we scored a few new outfits! A mom out shopping by herself even complimented me on taking my girls clothes shopping. (I’m not sure I had a choice, but I’ve learned that the bar for compliments for dads is very, very low.)

After Kohl’s it was time to get the eleven-year-old ready for a sleepover. I was a little bothered that her friend had chosen this particular Saturday to have Hannah over, since this was a “make-up” day with the girls from back in December when their mom took them to New Jersey on one of my weekends. Having to drive from Kohl’s back to my place and then to her mom’s place to get sleepover supplies didn’t help my attitude. But Hannah ended up having a grand old time with her friend, and Lily and I got a little time to ourselves. In fact, that time with Lily turned out to be the highlight of the day for me, even better than The Book of Life.

One of Lily’s favorite things to do is to run. Her attitude: Why walk when you can run? When we go for walks with the dog, Lily is always asking if she can run ahead. And when I pick her up from childcare, she sprints across the entire facility to give me an “attack hug.” The girl likes to run. And I do, too. I tried going running with Hannah last fall — she had graduated to a bigger soccer field and needed to up her endurance — but it didn’t take. I hadn’t tried running with Lily until last Saturday. Hannah was at her sleepover, Lily wasn’t due back at her mom’s for a few hours, and the weather was unbeatable.

We dressed out, me in my winter running gear and Lily in some spare soccer gear, and headed for the Williamson County Recreation Center. There’s a trail that starts at the Rec Center that I use on my long runs, and that’s the trail that Lily and I hit. It was more of a run-walk, with plenty of slowdowns for Lily when needed, but we ended up covering a mile and a half. She was thrilled to go running with her dad, and I was thrilled to spend time doing something we both enjoy so much. I don’t know when we’ll get another chance, given how cold and gray it usually is here in the winter, but we’ll definitely go out again. (I’ll need to remember to bring some Gatorade next time.) I might even see if she’s interested in running a 5K later this year!

After showering and changing, we had all of 30 minutes before I had to take her to her mom’s house. That was just enough time for a quick game of Dominion. She won handily, but I’ll admit that I didn’t try very hard. My little game girl!

What a great Saturday with my girls.
