Double digits! While I was trying to wrap my brain around that, Hannah had a grand old time with her friends (and Lily!) at her birthday party yesterday. Hannah is all about arts and crafts these days, so we had a craft party at Michael’s. More specifically, we had a duct tape party, something I’m pretty sure didn’t exist when I was ten. Hannah and eight of her friends took shallow metal trays and turned them into colorful bulletin boards by wrapping them in duct tape and gluing on some corkboard. The project sounded kind of simple to me, but it took them the better part of an hour and they absolutely loved it. Those girls are all about the duct tape! Especially when it features bacon or mustaches.

The duct tape theme extended to the party favors, each of which consisted of a brand new roll of duct tape piled high with candy and bracelets. Kudos to Hannah’s mom for thinking of this idea. Since each favor featured a different duct tape pattern, we played a version of the gift swap game one usually plays at Christmas parties. Each girl drew a number, number one went first by picking one of the favors, number two had the choice of stealing from number one or picking a new favor, and so on. These girls were decisive, making for a fast and fun party favor game.

You only turn ten once, which is why I wanted Hannah to have a party with a bunch of her friends this year. This might be one of the last such parties Hannah has. As she gets older, I’m guessing she’ll want smaller celebrations, maybe just a sleepover with a couple of friends. Or no party at all, just a trip to a Taylor Swift concert. This year, however, she got to have fun the way ten-year-olds do, being silly with her friends making duct tape crafts. They’re good friends, too… sweet, honest girls around which Hannah can be herself. I’m thankful for that!

Happy birthday, my new ten-year-old!
